Aligning Industry and Government

The term “two sides to every coin” is very apropos in describing the relationship between the petrochemical industry and the oil and gas producers in North America. One side of the coin has the petrochemical industry, experiencing feedstock prices at their lowest level in many years, labour costs down 25 percent, and government interest in advancing value added initiatives. On the other side, oil and gas producers are facing continuing low market prices for their commodities, cutting costs and delaying new investments.

Landlocked resources, cheap feedstock prices, low labour costs, competition from US-based petrochemical interests and an interested government; is now the time to invest in the Canadian petrochemical industry? What do we do with the methane in light of the declining exports, and can the producers share in the value added uptick? What role can the Governments play? In other words, how can the petrochemical industry, government and stakeholders align their interest for the development of the next generation of value added industries? Is there something Alberta and Ontario can do together?
