Mission
Our mission is to provide relevant, independent, objective economic research and education in energy and environmental issues to benefit business, government, academia and the public.

Its Unique and Important Role

CERI is a joint undertaking of government, business and academic organizations. The analysis presented in the Institute’s studies and reports is put forward to assist Canadian companies, governments, consumers, and scholars. The research program addresses the impacts of policy, technological, and economic changes on Canada in general and on Canada’s international competitiveness and encourages awareness of energy issues by providing forums for discussion and debate. CERI’s international research contributes to improved understanding of the competitiveness of Canadian energy companies in foreign markets and enhances the Institute’s reputation for excellence through the application of its methodologies, approaches and/or analytical techniques. In addition, CERI’s international studies provide a vehicle for advancing Canadian interests in the developing energy sectors of foreign countries through the transfer of sound approaches to energy and related environmental regulation.

Key Objectives

Key objectives are the development of excellence in Canada in the analysis of energy issues studied to assist national, provincial and territorial government leaders and business decision makers and to improve understanding of the relative merits of alternative policy and business options.

Strategies for Achieving the Objectives

The strategies which the Institute has adopted to fulfill its mission include:

  • Development of an organization with the research capability to undertake economic analysis of energy issues which is recognized for its high standard of excellence throughout Canada and abroad. Enhancement of the knowledge base required for sound policy and business decisions through objective, independent economic research and innovative analysis.
  • Development of a network for the exchange of information, technology and expertise among and between companies, government departments and agencies, the University of Calgary, and other Universities and organizations and a forum for discussion among Canadian business, government, and university leaders.
  • Increasing the number of persons with competence and experience in the economic analysis of energy and related environmental issues by training research staff and students and by providing opportunities for interchanges with other organizations.
  • Providing access to expertise resident at the Institute to employees of the organizations which sponsor CERI and companies which belong to the Private Sector Sponsors of the Canadian Energy Research Institute.
  • Promotion of improved awareness and understanding of issues and options through publication of the results of CERI research and an active conference/seminar program.
