CERI 2013 Petrochemical Conference

Enabling the Value Chain in Western Canada

June 2-4, 2013  • The Delta Lodge at Kananaskis, Kananaskis, Alberta

The application of technology in the development of shale gas resources has altered the North American gas supply-demand balance, dramatically lowering market prices and undermining the competitiveness of the Canadian natural gas industry. The growth in natural gas supplies from shale gas and tight gas reservoirs in the United States has resulted in an oversupplied market and the potential exists for this situation to continue for years to come. On the surface this may be viewed as a good thing, which it may be for some consumers, i.e., petrochemical feedstock prices. However, the future of the gas industry and by association, the petrochemical industry, will be exposed to a new set of challenges that will need to be overcome before growing for the future.  Changes in pipeline flow direction as a result of expanding new supply basins, changes in demand for natural gas (power generation), changes to the petrochemical business in the United States, and the potential of LNG exports from the Gulf of Mexico and the West Coast of Canada could all contribute to a vastly different future.
