In November 2016, the Government of Canada announced that it planned to consult with provinces, territories, Indigenous Peoples, industry and environmental non-governmental organizations to develop a Clean Fuel Standard. The standard would require reductions in the carbon footprint of the fuels supplied in Canada, based on lifecycle analysis,1 meaning it would consider total carbon emissions from the origin of a fuel to the final usage (or recycling the end product of fuel usage).
