Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas generates considerably less carbon dioxide (CO2) per unit energy when burned. This is particularly true for coal; lignite coal emits about 101 kg of CO2 per GJ of energy produced, while natural gas emits about 56 kg of CO2 per GJ.1 In light of its lower GHG emission intensity, natural gas is often spoken of as a potential bridge fuel en route to lower or zero-intensity energy sources.....
